There are two interdependent ways in which off-topic (or even on-topic) threads get extinguished. One is for list members to stop responding to them (no, not even to say how reprehensible they think it is to continue a thread). The other, which has its greatest effect when it occurs concurrently with the first way, is for new threads to be started by list members who have other interests than the OT discussion (or the discussion of OT threads).

Nobody has any control over whether others continue any topics that are currently under discussion, but you can, instead of complaining about it, simply post a question to try to start a new topic thread. As a newcomer, you every "right" to do this, and many on the list would welcome the opportunity to write about something else. It does come off sounding a little rude to join a list one day and complain about the nature of the ongoing discussion the next without contributing something positive of your own.

While Klarinet can be a very useful resource for both novices trying to improve and professionals wanting to advance their knowledge from others' experiences, it is not a service organization devoted to helping those in need. It's an unmoderated email discussion group set up to attract people for whom clarinet is a common interest. As it happens within any other gathering of people, sometimes conversations are generated by what's on people's minds, and we ALL think about other things than clarinet (or even music) at least occasionally.

So ask away if you have questions - someone is bound to chime in with a response. But you haven't been here long enough to have any sense of where the threads that are current today got started or how they fit into the overall activity of Klarinet.

With all respect,

Karl Krelove
