Subject: [kl] Tuning experiment

I would like to try a VERY unscientific experiment, but one which we may all
find very revealing. All it will require is your Bb clarinet, a few minutes,
and a tuner. (Let's only do Bb clarinets right now, we'll save the A
clarinets
for later.)

For those who want to participate, I would like you to warm up as you
usually
do, for at least 15 minutes. Please try to use your "normal" reeds and avoid
unusually warm or cold temperatures.

Then I would like you to tune as you usually do to your tuner. A=440, 441,
442, it doesn't really matter for this experiment.

Then, close your eyes and play a second space F (thumb only). Please play
mezzo-forte. As you are playing, open your eyes, and look at the tuner. Then
record how sharp or flat your are from "on the needle."

Then do the same for the 12th above, high C, second leger line above the
staff. Record how sharp or flat you are from "on the needle."

Please do not use "special fingerings."

Computer the "spread" on the 12ths and report back in.

If you want, tell us about make/model of clarinet you use and, if
applicable,
special barrel (Moennig, Chadash, Fobes, etc.) that you use.

For example, on my 1968 Buffet R-13, using a Buffet barrel, my throat F is 5
cents flat, and my high C is 11 cents sharp, with a "spread" therefore of 16
cents.

Call it a consciousness-expanding experiment.
