Daniel,
The cues are there because this work (and all other romantic-era trios in
which the clarinet takes the place the violin would normally have in a "Piano
Trio") was published as a piano trio with an alternate part provided for the
violin. It was (and still is, if you think about it) one of the ways composers
got more mileage out of their works. Other examples are the Beethoven op. 11
Trio, the Bruch 8 Trios, etc. Ignore the violin cues. Alternate scorings
usually add or alter the parts (see the above examples again) but the piano
score is usually left intact (and thus, has ALL the cues). It would be really
conscientious of publishers to clean up their parts so such minor descrepancies
don't show up - but don't hold your breath.
