In addition to all the anti-spam methods already mentioned, using a
longer screen name (more letters in the name) helps a litte when
defending against spammers who generate addresses at random and then
wait to see which copies get delivered. Erik, I notice that your
screen name has only 6 letters.

Once I received a flurry of spams with many "CC:" recipients. The
"CC:" addresses were the equivalent of:

abc@------.com, abc@------.com [....]
abd@------.com, abd@------.com [....]
abe@------.com, abe@------.com [....]

and so forth until they happened to hit on my address which (at the
time) had only 5 or 6 letters in it. I tried to calculate how many
emails may have been sent out in order to stumble on my address
(depending on where in the sequence the spammer had begun). It was a
huge number, but this is what computers are especially good at.
