In the U.S. religion and politics are separate (or are supposed to be).
Law can be and very often is, political. Religion is not legally
supposed to be political, though many try to make it so, hence the
battle over same sex marriage. for the most part those who oppose same
sex marriage do so because of religious beliefs.
