Subj: [kl] The Howarth extension
Date: Tue, 2 Mar 2004 10:31:24 -0500

Not having been to the Howarth basset extension launch, I now find that what
I wrote about the extension was misleading. Here is the true situation.

Howarth are offering a RH joint matched to your current A clarinet, of
whatever make. (So it could be a Buffet, Selmer, Leblanc and so on as well as
a Howarth.) The price will vary according to which of a limited range of
keywork options you choose, but a suggested ballpark figure for the extension
joint is UKP2500.

The idea of a similar service for the Bb instrument has not been aired, but
according to my information there is no reason why it shouldn't be possible.

It seems to me to be an excellent plan. Previous bespoke extensions required
the customer to provide a complete clarinet to start with, and the lower
joint was produced from the existing RH joint of that instrument. But this
way, you effectively get two instruments for the one price-tag, which is much
lower than the cost of, say, a Buffet or Selmer basset-clarinet.

Of course, the proof of the pudding is in the eating, and I haven't yet tried
the prototype, for which I gather the top joint wasn't a Howarth but a
Selmer.
