Hi Brian,

If I was in your shoes, I would consider a total overhaul by someone =
qualified to properly rebore your instrument, if necessary, and then set =
it up to play properly (total overhaul). This would be less expensive =
than a new horn, and in all likelihood, would result in a better =
performing instrument than a new horn would. The new horn would need a =
complete set-up at time of purchase anyway. I have yet to come across =
one that didn't.

If you plan on buying your horn from the shop where you try these =
instruments, then it isn't a waste of staff time to help you while you =
shop. If you aren't going to buy the instrument from the shop where you =
try it, then it is a waste of YOUR time to try it there. Why try =
something that you have no intention of buying?

You need to figure out what things about your current horn you don't =
like. Then decide whether or not these things can be fixed by a =
repairman. If they can, then I would have them fixed instead of buying =
a new horn. Any clarinet can be made to look like it is new. If you =
want silver keys and you now have nickel, keys can be re-plated with =
silver. A poor scale can be made as close to perfect as possible and =
stuffiness can be eliminated. A different mouthpiece, ligature and reed =
can change things you don't like.

I'd try hard to keep what you have and have it tuned up. You will =
likely pay less and get more of what you want that way. A good =
repairman can create a beautiful instrument for you that you can't =
replicate with a new one. The new clarinet will more than likely need =
most everything the old one does.
