Brian

you are in kind-of the same boat that I am in but I plan to buy around july
(clarinet fest). I recently tried some instruments. I was very honest with
the store and explained that:
I was not coming to buy TODAY
I was going to go to other stores and try other brands and models
I told them that I was going to fest and would be buyng my
instrumnet at that time. Though not neccessarily at the fest.
I also promised them that I would come back (and I will) at a later
date to do a finale comparison
And when I come back I would have a "clarinet friend" along for a
second opinion.

they were very receptive and did not push for a sell. I fact I did not
learn the price of any of the instruments that I tried. Nor do I want to at
this stage. In fact I can only guess at the relative cost of one to the
other.

I see no problem with trying out anything, that is part of the company's job
if they are to sell something. Lets not slip into the walmart mentality
where you are expected to grap THEIR selection off of THEIR shelve that THEY
decided to put there.
