The problem isn't shopping on the Internet. It's shopping with Internet
sellers whose privacy policy states that your personal information may
be sold to others.

I recommend that you choose your merchant carefully, read the merchant's
privacy policy, and purchase only if their policy is that they share
e-mail addresses and other personal information only when required by
law to do so. This is what I do at Bayside Music Press. I've never
sold, given away or otherwise revealed the e-mail addresses or anything
else about any customer, and I won't unless a court order requires it.
Nobody gets spammed as a result of buying from me, and you are safe with
other reputable retailers as well. But READ their privacy policy!
