Audrey, I recently did what you are proposing. I changed my primary
email address, the one administered by my ISP. I just added 1 digit
to my old email address to keep it simple. Since I did this I have
not received any spam or junk mail at all and it has been about 2
months now. (I am a little surprised by this fact!)

The easiest part of changing my email address was coordinating with my
ISP. I told them what I wanted to do and they said something like,
give us a few minutes and it will be changed. The next easiest part
was advising the folks in my email address book. Although I was a
little surprised by the number who said they must not have received
the change notice. The hardest part was updating my email address in
what turned out to be about 25 different locations scattered all over
the internet. Places like my banks web pages, Klarinet List of course,
several genealogical list that I subscribe to, Yahoo.com which I use
for my secondary email address, (as mentioned by OrmandToby above.)
Then ebay, Amazon, by online pharmacy, a couple clubs that I belong
to, PayPal, AOL's IM, and it went on and on...........I found a couple
I had overlooked as long as a week or two later!

It was worth it however to eliminate the SPAM! All my archived email
is still there and unaffected. I also use, primarily, Netscape...
