Before I reply, I should introduce myself to the group. My name is
Tom. My wife Kelly and I play clarinet in several groups in Michigan,
USA. Kelly plays Eb, Bb, and Basset Horn, and I play Bb, Basset Horn,
and Bass. We have been lurkers on the list for quite some time and are
happy to now participate.

For the fastest change to a piccolo, I played in a semi-professional
orchestra and the principle flute had to make a quick change to piccolo
to double a part. Instead of putting the piccolo in her lap, she kept
it in her pants behind her back (head joint pointing up). This let the
natural contours of her body keep the instrument in place. When she
needed to make the switch, she would put the flute down with her left
hand while reaching behind her back for the piccolo with her right
hand. She said that it improved her posture and kept the instrument
warm.

Regards,
Tom Smith
