Tim -

Your situation is similar to my own except that I had not played for over 40
years and I was retired when I resumed playing, so I'm somewhat older (75).
I used my student day's Dubois horn (believed by me to be a Buffet "second")
for a couple years and then after trying out several Buffet, Selmer and
Leblanc Bb and A horns; I found that the Leblanc Concertos suited me best.
My setup is a circa 1940 Goldbeck mpc., Rovner Eddie Daniels ligature and 3
1/2 V12 Vandoren reeds. And I play double lip. For me, the Concertos are
easy blowing -- just the right amount of resistance meaning that I don't
have to "fight" the horn.

I realize that my horns are the "older" Concertos now that Leblanc has
improved them to a Concerto II model. I have heard that the new model is an
even better horn. If I were younger and the stock market was up even more
than it is, I would be thinking about trading up.

Although I believe Leblanc brought out its new models more than a year ago,
there could be an older model or two out there at close-out prices. Give
Leblanc a serious look.

A bit of advice that is often expressed on the list by members who are
lifetime professional players is to get help from your teacher or from an
experienced clarinetist, (take him or her along if possible) use a tuner to
check the horn's intonation, (is the horn in tune with itself), try the
horns with several mouthpieces and reed strengths.

Good hunting.

Subject: [kl] can't wait

Can't wait till Sat. I get to try out some upper level Selmer Clarinets at
the local music store. My first time ever playing upper level clarinets.
Sad but true, 48 years old and never played anything but Students
clarinets(conn director, Vito). Except for a 5 minute "love affair" with a
Selmer Arty's at the very same store a year ago. And that time I had not
played in over 30 years, so my embrochure was weak to say the least.
Anyway, I promised myself that if I stuck with a year I would treat
myself to a "REAL" clarinet.
The hunt starts this Saturday. There is a Leblanc and Buffet dealer 2
hours away so maybe the following Sat?????
Then of course there is the CLARINET FEST in July only 1-1/2 hours away.
I feel like a school boy on his first date with the head cheerleader..
Can't wait.

thanks for listening.
