I would seriously question the latter, as it seems highly ambiguous to
me. Also, "second ending" is meaningless in a vamp situation. Mouthing
"go on" as someone mentioned would be out of the question in my book. If
you have any say in the matter I highly recommend the looping finger /
closed fist method - no ambiguity, quite clear to see. In fact, I can
still picture my HS conductor doing that 25 years ago. And it doesn't
matter which axis the looping is, horizontal or vertical, the intuitive
interpretation is the same.
