Jim,

I like the Jamie Aebersold books. You can find one that suits your level
and desired style of playing. Volume one gives a good outline and there
are almost a hundred more to choose from. All the CDs are recorded with
leading artists and you can jam your heart out. It's what we use in my
improv class.
