Subj: [kl] Three Greek Dances
Date: Sun, 15 Feb 2004 12:46:25 -0500

I=92d like to tell you about my "Three Greek Dances" for Bb clarinet and=20=

marimba that was recently premiered by Drs. Konrad Owens and Adam=20
Brenner at Mansfield University in PA. The dances are stylized by=20
preserving the flavor of the dances while treating the material in a=20
more developmental and contrapuntal manner. Kalamationos is the most=20
popular Greek dance and is Peloponnesian in origin. Like its cousin,=20
the Syrtos the national dance of Greece, it is in 7/8 meter grouped as=20=

3-2-2. The Syrtos is a more dragging dance while the Kalamationos is=20
more bouncy. Zeibekiko has its origin in the Eastern Aegean Islands. It=20=

is in 9/4 meter at a slow tempo with a lot of syncopation. This=20
movement is written in 3/4 for the ease in reading but preserves the=20
phrasing of 9/4 most of the time. Hassapikos is a buthcher=92s dance in=20=

2/4 time with eight measure phrases. It begins moderately and increases=20=

tempo throughout the dance. Duration 10:00; College or Professional=20
Level. You can see and hear excerpts of this piece by visiting my web=20
site at http://cooppress.hostrack.net and clicking on "compositions"=20
then "mixed ensembles". Thanks for considering my music.
