We always use four parts when we play it here. Mind you, we have played it
once in the history of the orchestra.
I think the desired effect is of doubled clarinets. Clarinet one and three
are unison and two and four are unison but for a few notes. When you reach
the second page, unless you are of robust virtuosic calibre the unison will
be of some comfort because of the large leaps.
I think the body of sound created by four clarinets legitimizes the use of
four.
The notes will be covered using only clarinets one and two.
