I usually have a talk (and sometimes even hand out a policy statement)
about such things with new students. I tell them that what they're
buying is my TIME. When I set that time aside, I commit to that
appointed time, I plan nothing else in my life for that time but to
teach them. For that reason I charge for lessons missed for all but
major problems. If a blizzard is going on, I tell them that no lesson
is worth risking life and limb...so call and we'll make it up some
other time. Most of the time I ask for a twenty-four hour notice when
they need to cancel. If they have a shaky reason for missing I will
offer them a make-up time, within that week that will be at my
convenience. If they can't make it, then I tell them that I will have
to charge them.

The best thing to do is take the money up front. Then, if there's a
question, you don't end up being out and loosing the money.
