Subj: [kl] Multiphonics in general

I just wrote something about Maxwell Davies's "Eight Songs for a Mad King",
in which I said something like, 'a multiphonic based on a low B suffices'.

To make sense of this remark, you need to have the experience of producing
multiphonics on chalumeau notes. The easiest ones to start with are, I
think, are those based on low E -- ie, all holes closed.

If you finger low E, blow hard, and think E three ledger lines above the
stave, with your tongue highish in the mouth, you will eventually be able to
play a complex chord including both the lower and the upper E. Then,
modifications of tongue position allow a glissando of the upper note downward
through an interval of a sixth (to G sitting on the stave) and back.

This is the basis of the technique.
