I think your earlier point about a beat-up old briefcase with a
cheap-looking clarinet case inside it being less likely to get stolen,
as well as having a personalized look, makes a lot of sense. Thieves
work quickly, and they are much more likely to overlook something that
looks like it came out of a dumpster, gramma's attic or a pawn shop.
