Southwest Airlines, which I use most often, limits the size of
carryon (hand) baggage to 10x16x24 inches; would the Wiseman
case meet those requirements? Just because something physically
fits in the overheard compartment doesn't mean you'll be allowed
to stow it there. I have nightmarish fantasies about trying to
stow a valuable instrument overhead and being forced to check it
in an inadequate case.

Yes, "checked" baggage is that which travels in the cargo hold.
"Hand luggage" is usually called "carryon" in the U.S. Which
brings to mind a joke: Two vultures are checking in at an airline
ticket counter. One of them is carrying a dead chicken. The ticket
agent looks at the chicken and says, "Will you be checking that?"
The vulture replies, "No, it's carrion."
