OK as an anglo I've got to ask USAnians. What do you think is happening
when a salesman or woman makes a pitch; is he setting out his wares, or is
she throwing something at you? Could explain why we see the US as the land
of the hard sell.

I think it will all become clear if we just consider that cricket
players bowl a ball -- and do it on a pitch; whereas baseball players
pitch a ball -- but never on a pitch.
(always eager to improve Anglo/colonial understanding)
