Heh! One of my daughters was an exchange student in London during high
school. We told her that she must call home as soon as she was settled
in her exchange home and reassure us (my wife was alive then) that she
was OK. When her call came (2 or 3 days later than expected, of
course), I asked her anxiously "What is it like in London?" I know
what it's like because I've spent some time there --- what I was really
asking was "Is your exchange home OK?"

Her reply: (keep in mind that this is a kid who grew up in drywall and
stucco tract houses, had never walked on cobblestones, etc etc etc)

"Dad! You can't believe how OLD England is! I'm living in a house
made of stones! They even have a castle here in the middle of the
city! The only thing I recognize [to keep this post on topic about
music] is that their son has his own punk rock band and wears a ring
in his nose and dyes his hair blue!"

....sorry, sometimes it's hard to fight off the nostalgia..... What I
meant, of course, is that downtown New York is older than downtown Las
Vegas or downtown Pacoima.
