New York - what a place.....

I hated the place - Lincoln Centre apart. When I was in New York last
September I spent most of my time at the Lincoln Centre too - and
managed to fit in the opening night at the Met! Quite a nice house -
until you see Covent Garden - but the production was superb - a
magnificent cast headed by Renee Fleming and of a standard that any
house would be very very proud to put on. (But why on earth serve
champagne - even NV - in plastic glasses????) I found New York to be
rude, ugly and so easy to get lost in - I kept losing the
Waldorf=Astoria, which I suppose says how little I got my bearings, as
it was always where I started out! It's not a place that I want to
return to at all....

Were you in New York during late April I'd have to say that you'd want
to see the Queen Mary in dock from the 22nd to the 25th, and the Queen
Elizabeth berthed with her on the 25th. At 5 pm on the 25th the two
ships will leave New York together, and sail across the North Atlantic
together, arriving together in Southampton on the 1st May 2004. Two
Queens together is not a sight you will see often, and the voyage is the
last crossing of the Queen Elizabeth and the first for the Queen Mary -
so it will be quite an occasion.

I did enjoy the Dinosaurs though - both as it took me back to my youth
and because they were very well displayed - I really must go and see the
collection in London as I haven't been for the best part of thirty
years!

Mind you, I'd go back to San Francisco like a shot! That is a really
lovely city.

Subject: [kl] Hooray! Back to New York!!

After an absence of at least 5 years, I will finally be returning to
visit New York in the middle of March for one week, including two
weekends. I plan to virtually 'camp out' at Lincoln Center and the big
art galleries, take in opera, ballet, orchestral and chamber concerts
and some Broadway shows if possible, shop till I drop and eat really
good food. It would be a real pleasure to meet some of our New York
'klarinet' friends for a drink, lunch or dinner.

Please let me know if you'd like to meet. And if anyone has clarinet
concerts coming up I'll try to attend. Also, could some of you, New
Yorkers or not, please make some insider suggestions of what to hear,
see or do in Manhattan and environs? I'm all ears....

TIA and hope very much to meet some of you in March!

Audrey
