Subj: [kl] Orchestral Rep Suggestions
Date: Thu, 29 Jan 2004 14:37:32 -0500

I play in an orchestra at our community college. The orchestra has a new
director (they just were authorized two additional full-time positions) who
has not conducted an orchestra before (he is a professional bass player).

Because the orchestra currently meets in the late afternoon, instead of the
evening, the instrumentation is not ideal. The strings are reasonably well
balanced and are mostly better high school players with a few adults. The
winds (all adults) are pretty limited (they get more people to come in just
before a concert). For most rehearsals we have 2 clarinets, 1-2 flutes,
oboe, and horn.

Does anyone have some suggestions for repertoire that would be worth
reading with this group? Not all the parts would necessarily have to be
covered. I would hope we could find a few things from the 19th and 20th
centuries.

Thanks,

Gary
