Elise,

I do find that many players playing a Kaspar mouthpiece for the first
time.....are disappointed. So many of the newer mouthpieces are very free
blowing. When a player comes from this "way" of playing to a Kaspar, it's a
shock. Most of the Kaspars that I've played (this numbers in the many, many
100's since the middle 60's) have a far amount of resistance built into the
mouthpiece. The late Everett Matson worked on Kasper mouthpieces a
lifetime...."fixing" them. What "fixing" consisted of mostly was taking some
of the resistance out of the mouthpiece without losing the magic. He worked
on what he liked to call the "cheap freedom" part of the mouthpiece. As far
as I could tell and from discussions with Everett.... to make the mouthpiece
play "easier"...he removed a small amount of material from the baffle on the
table side of the mouthpiece. This is what he called the "cheap freedom"
area.
Kaspar mouthpieces aren't for everyone. I know this. ...BUT if any of you
on the list have one and you're not happy with it....send it my way. If it's
any good (I'll always have a student for it) I'll have them put it to work.
(no eBay prices...haaahhaha. I often kid that I could sell my dirty old
socks on eBay for more than I paid for them new.)
