Here in WV the Solo and Ensemble Festivals referred to by Rebecca are the
MENC-sanctioned, adjudicated regional events. It's open to grades 9-12, and
any student soloist or group/ensemble receiving a I-Superior at the regional
level then can submit a tape of their performance to the WV All-State
Committee, which selects a handful of performers who appear at the annual
WVMEA convention in April as featured recitalists.

Rebecca - I did the Rossini in college with wind ensemble and with a
pianist, and the band score we used had a choice of two different portions
cut for various reasons. The only one of the two I remember without looking
jumped from the end of the next-to-last variation to about twenty bars
before the cadenza in the end of the final variation - I can dig out my old
marked copy and tell you for sure. That last variation I think was cut in
our score by someone who just had trouble playing the solo in the past, and
I reinserted it for our performances. Just a thought. I do remember that the
cut was very natural and fit the piece nicely if it was used.
