Gosh Karl, you don't know what the Solo and Ensemble (Festival) is? ;-)

I thought that they existed everywhere in the US and had for many years. I
played in them in the 1960s (mostly in bands and orchestras, but I did one
solo and one clarinet trio when I was in ninth grade). Here in Nevada they
are done on the country and the state level. In California the
subdivisions were smaller.

Groups and individuals play for a rating, typically something like I
(Outstanding, II Excellent, III (?), etc. It is one of the ways that
school music teachers attempt to demonstrate that they are doing a good job.

Typically solos are with piano accompaniment and before a single
judge. Participation in solo part of the festivals is usually optional but
some music teachers use inducements to encourage participation. At my
daughter's performing arts high school, you are required to participate at
least once as a soloist and meet some other requirements (like trying out
for honor groups) to receive recognition at graduation.
