We now have this new (and long awaited) book by Albert Rice:

C178: The Clarinet in the Classical Period by Albert R. Rice. Oxford=20
University Press, 2003, HB, 316 pages. The author of The Baroque Clarinet=20
(see above) presents a comprehensive study of the clarinet through the=20
classical period, from 1760 to 1830. During the early part of this period=20
the clarinet was transformed from a typically baroque instrument to an=20
essential piece of the classical ensemble. Barely a half century later, in=

1812, Ivan M=FCller developed the thirteen-keyed clarinet, which brought the=

instrument into the romantic age. In addition to the history, this book=20
includes chapters on playing techniques, music for the classical clarinet,=

the clarinet in performing groups as well as extensive notes, a detailed=20

Looks like a great book. Sorry about the price. They have a book on the=20
oboe that is over $100.
