I'm in the middle of overhauling a cheap antique Buffet horn off of ebay, it's definitely a learning experience. I have the upper joint completed (keys move freely once again and the new pads seem to seat ok), and last night I disassembled the lower joint. A couple of things I noticed - the upper joint is a bit longer than the one from my R13. I have not measured the bore, but it seems smaller perhaps? The barrel is longer, and the mouthpieces I have do not seat at all; they are way too loose. However, the barrel from my R13 does fit on the old Buffet. Have "standard" mouthpiece fitting sizes changed over the years? Might this be one reason old horns often come with non-original barrels? Are there tubular shims that one can use to fit mouthpieces into larger sockets?
