...well, I'll never know the answer. Someone sniped me with only 30
seconds remaining.... and anyway, I wasn't prepared to spend major money
for a potential junker.

The text books stress that the reed does (normally) contact the rails
and stop the air flow completely; but this isn't quite the same thing as
saying the reed *must* make full contact in order to still play.

So who knows, perhaps I'm better off not winning the auction. It
might've been expensive to obtain a new mouthpiece to fit an old
instrument if, in fact, the mouthpiece was thrashed.
