It sounds like you have a Selmer bell modified by (or in the style of)
Rosario Mazzeo, formerly bass clarinet w/ the Boston Symphony I believe. He
would have the bell ring lopped off to improve response and make the long B
sound better. One of my best friends has a Selmer A that had this done -
it's a very, very nice clarinet. (Of course, since I didn't play the horn
before the bell ring was removed, I have no way of knowing if that made a
difference).

I've seen this a number of times, curiously always on Selmers. Here's some
examples: http://www.charlesfail.com/Signet%20Mazzeo%20Clarinet.htm,
http://www.usd.edu/smm/Mazzeocollection.html and
http://www.usd.edu/smm/Mazzeo5863.html. The second link gives a pretty good
description of what he did with the "Mazzeo model."

If you're terribly interested, the Woodwind has an intermediate model for
sale at http://www.wwbw.com/Item/?itemno=118055.

Okay, well then maybe you can tell me about the bell that came with
this clarinet. It's a Selmer Series 10 bell, really nice. It has a MUCH
smaller diameter at the bottom than a "normal" bell, and it has no metal
trim. Oh, and it's marked "A". What is this kind of bell made for?
Does it change the sound, or the intonation, or what?
Or maybe it's just for "cute"? :-)
