Well, without seeing it, it is hard to tell. My guess is that the ring
that is supposed to be there is simply missing for some reason. That would
account for the smaller diameter. I know some English clarinets are built
without bell rings on purpose, but I don't think I have ever seen a French
clarinet designed without one. That it is marked "A" probably means that
it is meant for an A clarinet.
