I came to this thread a bit late.

I'll put my £.02 in thusly:

First of all, I doubt I'd EVER buy any instrument off e-bay, unless I
could drive bodily to the seller's home and play the instrument. Too
many ifs, and, and buts in the process, and I'm just too suspicious of
an individual. I don't trust e-bay for such an important purchase as a
musical instrument.

Secondly, and probably a tad off this topic, but on the topic of
clarinets: My Yamaha Bb has DIED and will be overhauled soon (thanks to
the generosity of my wonderful gentleman friend - every woman
clarinetist should have a man like this!) Anyway, this past summer, I
bought a beginner horn from Sue Raycraft, of this list, for my son to
start on. He's kind of come and gone with it. I think he'll probably
start again this summer. In the meantime, I needed a horn to play on.
Sue, this horn has been a lifesaver. I took it to school one day when I
subbed for a band director in middle school (old h.s. pal of mine - she
had a doc appt. for her son)

If I were to buy a horn from an individual over the internet, it would
only be from the people I've gotten to know on this list. Many of you,
I've been reading your posts for three or four years now. There are
some people who say you don't get to know people just online. I beg to
differ. I have to say, "The pen is INDEED mightier than the sword."
(or would that now be keyboard?)
