Except that P.T. Barnum was not the originator of the saying. It was, rather, a Syracuse banker
named David Hannum, with visions of easy money from a scam about a stone giant "discovered" by
George Hull in 1869.

As for all this business about mediocre clarinets selling for inflated bids, it is as it always
will be: Caveat emptor. Nobody else bears responsibility, regardless of the relative ethics of
the seller.
