I asked one of the owners of a metal clarinet up for sale how he
concluded that it was silver, as contrasted with silver plating, and his
answer was that the put a magnet on the body and there was no
attraction, so it had to be silver. I was not about to tell him that it
could have been bamboo or chopped liver.
