I did something like that recently - I bought a Buffet Bb for a little over $100 on eBay. The wood seems to be in good condition, no cracks or anything, but it was filthy and grimy and the pads are totally shot; it's probably been in an attic for years. I have the top joint disassembled (except the posts) and am waiting for pads as well as some supplies from the Doctor.

The horn is a 1921 Buffet (according to the serial number [thanks to Sue]) with a wraparound register key. It's also marked Carl Fischer, a friend mentioned it being a stencil, not sure exactly what that means (made by Buffet for Carl Fischer?). I'm looking forward to seeing how my restoration turns out, it's definitely an experiment for me.
