Subj: [kl] Bass Clarinet part in C
Date: Wed, 14 Jan 2004 05:13:45 -0500

Dan mentioned that he had only seen one bass clarinet part in C. When
Schoenberg wrote the Suite Op 29 he was so anti-tonality that he could not
bring himself to accept transposing instruments. Thus the three printed
clarinet parts are headed Kleine Klarinette, Klarinette, and Bassklarinette
and all three are written in C (the bass clarinet mostly in the bass clef
at pitch but occasionally in treble clef at pitch). I can see from the
state of the bass part that in 1964 I did a lot of work on it - what a
nightmare!
I suppose that it was left to the player to decide which size of small
clarinet he/she felt like playing! I dealt with that by whiteout on the
bottom line of the stave, adding another line at the top and adjusting all
the accidentals.
I believe that later it was printed with transposed parts.
