David, I knew her father who was the clarinetist with the LA Phil
before
Michelle later assumed the position. He was a student of Bellison and
also was part of Bellison's clarinet orchestra which goes back to the
1930s. If I am correct, he is still alive.

I presume that Michelle's father was not responsible for her interest
in
the Oehler system. He was strictly a Boehm player and would have had
no
reason to influence his daughter towards the selection of a new
clarinet
system.

Also, unless my information is inocrrect, Michelle's switch to Oehler
was in mid-career and while she was already principal with LA and
playing Boehm for a number of years. I'm also informed that the
switch
was initiated as a result of a suggestion from Zubin Mehta. Michele's
husband is also a clarinetist though he plays a Boehm system.

My only interest in bringing her up was because there was an
interesting
posting about an individual who switched from Oehler to Boehm and I
waa
curious to understand the motivation behind someone who did exactly
the
opposite.

I'll ask her. I think it was more early on in her Career (already was
Principal but not for long) and yes, her dad is still alive. I spoke
w/her about 2 weeks ago, asking how Kalman was doing as I work on a
Klezmer/Jewish style CD he made and she said that he can do more
pushups than she can! She also endorses Yamaha and I think it is on
the Boehm System if memory serves right. Uses 1 system for 1 style of
playing and the other for another. I'll have to ask her about it.
