Is there a rule of thumb about the magnitude of abrupt changes in
diameter, such as would occur if the two sides of the bell joint were
different diameters?

Counter-examples: in a polycylindrical clarinet, there is a taper
between diameters. Barrels taper rather than 'step' down in diameter.
Tuning rings are used to avoid abrupt diameter changes when pulling out.

Just for the heck of it, I measured the bell vs. lower tenon diameters
on my instrument (I have 2 bells). All the diameters are identical.
