The ring is ornamental, or at least that is what I was told. But bells =
do make a difference. I always thought that the difference was in the =
low notes and in the responsiveness of the instrument though. You could =
write to Morrie Backun, the bell and barrel wizard (or Walter Grabner). =
Walter posts to the list often and, while Morrie doesn't usually post, I =
am fairly certain he reads the list every day. You can get his contact =
info at www.backunmusical.com. You probably are correct though, about =
the change in playing ability.

I can almost join two thrads together here. I recently tried putting on =
a
bell from my old Albert System A clarinet on to my B&H 1010. The Albert
system bell has a metal ring on it's base and the 1010 one (which is =
thicker
wood) doesn't. I was extremely surprised to find that - at least to my =
own
taste in tonal quality - I seemed to hear a marked improvement, =
especially
in the throat tones. I'm still not sure whether this perceived =
improvement
was wishful thinking on my part, and I look forward to the day when I =
can
test it out on someone else used to listening to those kinds of =
differences.
I haven't measured the bores, but in my own mind I had attributed the =
tonal
change to the metal ring on the Albert bell - a feature I had previously
imagined to be largely decorative.=20
