Subj: [kl] bell choke
Date: Thu, 8 Jan 2004 21:11:33 -0500

Both Dave Hite (in his web writing about Moennig) and Clark Fobes (in =
his
Tuning and Voicing the Clarinet) mention that the bell's bore at its top
should be smaller then the bottom of the bottom joint.

On both my 40 yr old Moennig-Buffets (got from Hans in 1964) have bells =
that
don't have this choke. Bells and barrels have changed over the decades.

I tried putting a small amount of modeling clay in the top of my Bb's =
bell
and the horn instantly have a nicer, rounder tone quality, removing it =
made
the tone sound washed out in comparison.

Bottom of Bb bottom joint measures 0.845", top of Bb bell is 0.921"
Bottom of A bottom joint measures 0.855", top of A bell is 0.923"

Any thoughts, similar experiences, suggestions?
