Bill...

As with pinning, the idea is to "let" the instrument go back to where it
belongs instead of forcing it. Actually, it helps if you cool off the
instrument to open the crack as much as possible to allow thorough cleaning
with solvents and air pressure, and then allow the crack to close on its
own. Fill what remains with dust and CA. Really pack in the dust with a thin
tool. Then apply the glue. It will soak right in. That's part 1. After the
crack is "repaired", you do the banding to keep the crack from opening the
next time the clarinet decides to expand beyond its own capabilities to keep
its grain from opening up.

OMG! I've given away Classified Information!

Sounds like a less obtrusive-looking repair, and probably every bit as
strong as the metal band. But wouldn't you still have to compress the
clarinet somehow to make sure the crack was completely closed before you
applied the carbon fiber band?

If you have to mic a saxophone, the rest of the band is TOO LOUD!
