Thanks Mike for raising the fascinating question of differences in sound
quality between the two systems... Two main differences in costruction are
apparent, firstly Abert / Simple system instruments invariably have much
larger bore...Secondly, having fewer toneholes, the vibrating column of air
has less interference, ie the Albert is more akin to a perfectly smooth
tube.
nearly all the great masters of New orleans played Alberts, Dodds, Noone,
Bigard etc.
The problem facing "Younger" Dixieland players (Mostly Bohem practicioners)
is how to produce the big , fatter sound from the modern bohem horns
without going "Albert" & re-educating thei'r fingers... A compromise
solution adopted by many is to obtain a wide bore Bohem usually found in
the vintage era.. such as Boosey Hawkes1010, Selmer Centretone, etc ,and as
I recently discovered, a Conn 4N big bore ( As used by Artie Shaw ) model---
A bohem clarinet with that illusive" big " ,tone. not merely louder. What do
other posters think ?? Harold Troughton Blue Magnolia Jazz Orchestra,
Liverpool.
