Many thanks for all your information. It certainly fits my time-line
recollection and the technique of the conductor. I'm going to have to set
aside some time to get better acquainted with Google and the other search
engines to help research some of the questions that keep coming to mind
concerning music history that occurred during my lengthy hiatus from music
and playing.
Jim Fay was close "but no cigar" this time.

Gene, if it was indeed Frederick Stock, then it was earlier than you
remember. Maestro Stock died in October of 1942. He was succeeded as
Music Director by Désiré Defauw in 1943, and he was followed by Artur
Rodzinski in 1947. Next came Rafael Kubelik in 1950, and Fritz Reiner
in 1953. If the concert you saw was later than you recall, your
description could also apply to Reiner, who was notorious for his tiny
beat.
