And, later, after James Fay suggested that it might have been Frederick
Stock:

Gene, if it was indeed Frederick Stock, then it was earlier than you
remember. Maestro Stock died in October of 1942. He was succeeded as
Music Director by D=E9sir=E9 Defauw in 1943, and he was followed by =
Artur
Rodzinski in 1947. Next came Rafael Kubelik in 1950, and Fritz Reiner
in 1953. If the concert you saw was later than you recall, your
description could also apply to Reiner, who was notorious for his tiny
beat.
