.....the phrase that attracted my attention was "the reed excites the
air".

I was commenting that (mostly) the reed does not excite the air directly
in the sense of impacting or battering the air molecules directly.
Rather, the reed divides the pre-existing air flow into puffs without
adding any extra excitation, and it is the pre-existing energy from the
flow that is stored and released periodically in order to create
pressure cycles (sound waves).

For me, this mental image or metaphor contributes better to comfortable
playing and to pleasing music.
