I concede that it is probably POSSIBLE to compress the bore, but it seems
that it would take a considerable amount of pressure beyond what is
necessary to compress the band to do it. The compression would be coming
in the direction the wood would seem to be most capable of resisting it
from -- the natural arch of the cylinder wall.
