Frank,
I had a 65-year-old Buffet crack....the guy I bought it from told
me he didn't think I would need to break it in slowly like a new
one because it was "pretty well cured by now".....but not so.
Anyway, he pinned the crack and it's fine.
No need to chuck the horn. The spot where yours cracked is
like, THE most common spot for cracks to appear.
I would definitely have a pro do the work though.
I was told by Chris Millard at Backun Musical Services that lots of
clarinets actually sound BETTER after they've cracked and been
pinned!

> My 15 year old Buffet R13 just cracked! I thought it was out of the
danger zone, but I was gravely mistaken. It's a terrific instrument too. I
guess this cold midwestern weather did it. How many repairmen out there
superglue the cracks? It must be as good as pinning, since glues today are
incredible. Does pinning or gluing the crack affect the playing ability of
the instrument? I am hoping I don't need to chuck this great horn out and
get a new one because of a 1 1/2 inch long crack on the upper joint, which
extends from the tenon on the upper joint to the top trill key. Any ideas?
Help me! :)
