No MD I know of (perhaps I don't them all) records in .wav format; they
record in a compressed format which is recorded digitally AFTER
compression. The signal is uncompressed during playback. However, the
compression formula used is lossy - information is thrown out to save
space. The formulas used are complex, but in orchestral music, with its
very wide dynamic range, there are some effects which are audible. Things
are always getting better, but the losses are still audible and annoying
to me. Can't beat it for easy portability, though ... I have one that I
record on.

For that matter, the 16 bits/track CD format throws out a lot of
information, but it's less obtrusive. 16 bits isn't really a lot of
dynamic range for music ... and selecting a center level is harder than
one would suppose.
