the 5 rv and 5rv lyre will produce a centered, focused tone but not
necessarily a round quality...the lyre needs a reed structured to its
particular lay and facing qualities..if you like the mouthpiece, detesting
only the sound, try experimenting with reeds first.

i don't like the facing for the lyre models, particularly on buffets, for the
characteristics they impart unto the quality of tone - sound.

i find a 2rv with a harder reed will give a rounder, centered tone...

as to the qualities of 'tone color' ....chamber volume, the ratio of chamber
to bore volume, the degree of separation in sidewalls, the angle of sidewall
separation, the angle of the baffle, degree of concavatity of baffle [or lack
thereof] the quality of the interior finish of the chamber and bore [rough -
slick and smooth], are some of the factors involved.

your mouthpiece may only need slight tweeking to make it a masterpiece - or
sculpture fodder. however i find van dorens, by nature of their manufacturing
materials to be less capabile of a 'round' sound...being more consistently
sharp, focused quality [this is, of course, a subjective issue...]

you might find greater happiness and pleasure with different brand of
mp...the proponents of which are represented at various times herein upon the
list. other mp's i have found workable with RCs for the tone 'color ' you
appear to be searching for might include Bay, Borbeck, Ridenour...even the
buffet chedevilles [again, not the lyre] if the changes buffet made to the
blanks are corrected.

best advice...try a few and be prepared to be surprised....as in your old
piece that was dropped - one never knows what joys are right infront of you
until experienced...
